EU Maritime Day has been celebrated with an event organised by Nature Trust – FEE Malta and the European Commission Representation in Malta.

It also coincided with World Biodiversity Day and therefore both organisations had planned a morning of activities for the public to raise awareness on the seas and biodiversity at the Cirkewwa Marine Park.

Due to North Westerly winds on the day, both organisations agreed to postpone the Guided Kayak Tour event that was meant to be held as part of the awareness events. This was due to the wave height being unfavourable and could not be considered safe to fulfill the aims of the event.

Vincent Attard – Executive President of Nature Trust – FEE Malta said that as always the organisation was working towards raising awareness in the society about the importantce of Biodiversity and the seas to mankind and our planet.

“Today our seas are facing pollution problems and yet we depend on this habitat for our livelihood, our economy and our Social welbeing. It is for this reason, we want to bring people closer to the marine environment, while educating people about the importance of marine habitats and the importance of protecing habitats and species,” he said.

Attard concluded by saying that, “we look forward to being able to host this event, which will not be the only of its kind. Other activities will include also snorkelling activitivities and other educational events

The European Commission Representation in Malta said they ‘`wholeheartedly support Nature Trust (Malta)’s initiatives to promote the preservation of our environmental heritage for all generations. Our contribution to the activities being organised for European Maritime Day and World Biodiversity Day, here in Malta, is intended to share this message to as wide an audience as possible and we are grateful that the members of Nature Trust can contribute in doing this where they can.’’

Nature Trust thanked the European Commission Representation in Malta for their support in hosting the event and the Malta Tourism Authority who is also funding the Cirkewwa Marine Park Project
