Gozo beaches – Ramla Il Hamra, Hondoq and Marsalforn have been awarded with the Blue Flag status, as announced on the 6th of June.

The beaches have met criteria set by Nature Trust FEE in terms of regular water quality testing, environmental management, rescue operations, first aid stations and other services for people with disabilities that ensure that users of the beach are offered excellent service in any circumstance.

Minister for Gozo, Clint Camilleri, speaking at Ramla l-Hamra beach, explained that “this symbol puts more responsibility on us, as the Blue Flag challenges local authorities, managers and beach operators to the meet high standards set in the four main categories.”

He added that the Blue Flag is an “important quality certificate that also contributes to sustainable tourism.” The Minister insisted that he will be “continuing the work to enable the Ministry to apply for more recognition for more beaches in Gozo.”

“Among other things this summer we will be putting two new first aid stations at Ramla l-Hamra beach. I call on everyone who visits Gozo to be responsible, in particular when it comes to maintaining cleanliness in the beaches,” Camilleri said.

Nature Trust Chief Executive Vince Attard praised the commitment of the Gozo Ministry to maintain a high standard of beaches and pointed out that the educational aspect on which the Ministry is working was noted by the Foundation for Environmental Education.

Xaghra Mayor Dr Christian Zammit called on everyone to do their part to keep the beaches clean.
