Sea transport between Malta and Gozo registered increases in trips, passengers and vehicles during the second quarter when compared to the corresponding quarter of last year, the National Statistics Office said today.

Between April and June, a total of 10,338 trips were carried out, carrying a total of 1,478,626 passengers. Of these, 126,405 passenger crossed between the islands using the fast ferry.

June was the busiest month recording a total of 3,566 trips or 34.5% of total trips for the quarter, the NSO said.

1,352,221 passengers travelled between Mgarr and Cirkewwa during the second quarter, an increase of 49.0% when compared to the corresponding quarter of 2021.

June saw the highest number of passengers recorded – 459,524 or 34.0% of the total for the quarter. When compared to the previous year, the number of vehicles increased by 21.6%, totalling 498,214.

There were 8,675 trips during the second quarter, this was an increase of 19.6% over the same period in 2021. June registered the highest number of trips – 2,964 or 34.2% of total trips for the quarter.

During January-June, both passenger and vehicle traffic originating from Cirkewwa was busiest on Fridays and Saturdays.

On the other hand, from the Mgarr terminal, passenger traffic was highest on Sundays and Saturdays, while the highest number of vehicles were recorded on Sundays and Mondays, the NSO said.
