The Diocese of Gozo is this year dedicating its Pastoral Plan to the Word of God – the Bible, inspired by the words of the Gospel according to Saint Luke: “And he began to explain to them the Scripture” (24:27).

In a statement, the Diocese said that several initiatives of a pastoral nature have been made during the last months, including the distribution of a copy of the Gospel of Saint Matthew to all the houses in Gozo, a project that could be done with the financial aid of APS Bank.

The next initiative, at the request of Bishop Anton Teuma, will be: Shema – Illuminated Night by the Word, on Saturday, the 6th of May, between 7.00pm and 12.00am.

The name of this activity is taken from the Jewish word Shema, “Hear”: the first word of the biblical prayer that every Jew prays daily (Deut 6:4-5).

The activity will consist of several free attractions in the heart of Victoria, which will in some way have a connection with the Word of God.

This night of May 6 will really be ‘enlightened by the “Word of God” so it will take the form of notte bianca. The activities vary from an exhibition that offers its visitors a living experience, to musical concerts, to outdoor exhibitions by local artists, the sale of food with a biblical theme, as well activities aimed at children.

For this purpose both churches and public buildings will be used and the many squares and streets, where the public, with the help of a map, will be able to get around the attractions and learn about the content and message of the Holy Scriptures.

Shema – Illuminated Night will be held with the involvement of both communities and groups in the Church in Gozo, as well as numerous individual artists, with the aim of getting the main religious message out as well as also promoting local culture and traditions.

Among these is the Animae Gospel Choir under the direction of Pamela Bezzina who will give the closing concert in Piazza Independence, the Cash Duo, the Cordia String Quartet, the Gaulitanus Choir, the Gozo Diocese Youth Choir, the renowned chef George Borg and the opinion leader Peppi Azzopardi, among others.
