The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, recently presented certificates to members of the branch of the Red Cross Gozo, who had successfully completed two courses in Italy, followed by programmes from the Leonardo Da Vinci course for mobility and lifelong learning.
Two members of the Red Cross Gozo branch participated in these courses. One of the courses in the section was to establish psychological support, which is to be offered where needed, as well as critical incident stress debriefing for members of rescue and support who are traumatised.
The Red Cross Gozo and the Gozo General Hospital reached an agreement to collaborate together and begin providing these services on a regional basis. Two employees from the Gozo General Hospital and two members of the branch of the Red Cross Gozo will take part in the project.
The participation in the course was aimed at establishing a HAZMAT section in Gozo, to provide various first aid services and specialists on accidents involving biohazards and chemical materials. Seven people took part in this project, 3 members from the Red Cross, 2 from the Gozo General Hospital and 2 from the Department of Civil Protection.
They were made welcome by the Army of the Red Cross in Italy, where for two weeks they were trained on the decontamination of patients, detection of hazards or risks, command and control and the use amongst others of gas masks.
The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, praised these initiatives taken by the branch of the Red Cross Gozo. The Minister added that such initiatives should serve as a model for unions and other organisations to emulate, providing more services which will enable the whole community to enjoy a better quality of life.
