Moviment Graffitti has submitted its objection against what it describes as “another attempt to develop a site in an Area of Archaeological Importance of the Neolithic Ggantija Temples in Xaghra, Gozo, at Triq tal- Mithna.

PA/04782/22 filed by Perit Godwin Sultana on behalf of joint applicants – Leanne Portelli and Jodie lee Borg, is “to remove existing dilapidated structures, partial excavation of site, and to construct thirteen garages, reservoir at lower ground, two maisonettes, ten apartments at first, second, third and setback level, garden and construction of two pools at backyard and two at setback floor.”

Moviment Graffitti argued that “the proposed excavation works for pools would pose a significant risk to the windmill and temples nearby. Residents have already raised their concerns and have noted that excavations under other old houses in the area had not been permitted.”

It also pointed out that “the site falls within the Area of Archaeological Importance of the Neolithic Ggantija Temples, and as such excavation of any sort is unacceptable. It is just 30 metres away from Grade 1 scheduled Ta’ Kola Windmill, and falls within its Scheduled Building Setting as well as being in direct view of the culturally significant windmill. The proposed development thus goes directly against PA Circular 3/20.”

The organisation went on to say that the development “goes against Urban Objective 3 and Gozo Objective 1 of SPED, since it is located on Triq il-Mithna.”

I stressed that, “this notable road features Il-Mithna ta’ Kola on one end and the entrance to the Ggantija Temples on the other, making it an important and sensitive tourist zone. The street is frequented by visitors to the neighbouring Ggantija, Ta’ Kola and square, making its protection that of utmost importance.”

Deadline for submissions is the 12th of September 2022.
