The Gozo Business Chamber has expressed its “dissatisfaction” the timetable issued today by the operators of the fast ferry service operating between the two islands.

The Chamber argued that these timetables “defeat both the scope and the original purpose for which this service was introduced which is that of increasing Gozo’s accessibility, thereby tackling the deficiencies faced by the Gozitans who live in Gozo, but have to work or study in Malta.”

It stated that “the frequency and the lack of advance notice by which the timetable is changed provides for lack of trust in the service.”

To this end the Chamber said that it notes positively the Government’s statement that this service will be supported, thus recognising that this is essential for Gozitans. “Gozo must be treated as a distinct region with its difficulties.”

The Chamber pointed out that “this service is essential for Gozitans both at a societal and an economic level providing choice for persons to commute and travel easily between the two islands. This is done out of necessity.”

The Gozo Business Chamber concluded by saying that “to this end the European Commission should recognise the difficulties faced by Gozo as an island region and hopes that discussions between the Government and the Commission lead to a positive and rapid conclusion recognising Gozo’s disadvantages, and that accessibility is key for Gozo’s advancement.”
