Gozitan artist Victor Agius is exhibiting two works at an international art project named SPAM! CARTOLINE D’ARTISTA being held in Rome during October 2012. Agius was invited to participate by one of the directors of ‘Sguardo Contemporaneo’ a cultural organisation based in Rome which was founded in 2007 by a group of curators and art historians from the Sapienza University. This organisation promotes emerging artists and curates contemporary art projects.
Victor Aguis is exhibiting two small mixed media paintings on paper inspired by the Arab Spring named R-Evolution and Syria. His painterly oeuvres included an intervention within the pigments which incorporated combustion, collage of typed text and also local sand.
Agius studied at the University of Malta and got a degree in Art (2000 – 2004). He furthered his studies at Mcast under ceramist George Muscat, at the International School of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture in Perugia, Italy (2008) and at the Central Saint Martins College for Art and Design in London where he followed the course ‘Contemporary Fine Art Practice’ (2011). Agius works in painting, sculpture and installation. Raw clay, ceramics, stones, straw, twigs and branches, earth, natural pigments, oils and acrylics are some of the elements that Agius uses to create his bodies of work oriented around formless matter.
Some of his solo shows were held at the Opus 64 Galerie in Sliema and the Auberge d’Italie in Malta, and internationally in Lago Maggiore and Florence amongst others. He has also participated in several notable group exhibitions held at the Galleria D’Arte Sant’ Eufemia in Venice in 2011, Arte Padova Art Fair, at the Long Room Gallery at Oxford University in Oxford, at the Biennale Internazionale d’Arte Contemporanea in Florence, at the Centre Culturel Christiane Peugeot in Paris, at the Bricklane Gallery in London, at the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo and at the St. James Cavalier, Valletta, Malta.
