MIA register 10.9% passenger decrease in first 6 months

Malta International AirportMalta International Airport have announced their mid-yearly results from January to June 2009 and they show that they handled 1.25 million passengers between January and June this year a decrease of 153,755 movements (-10.9%) over the same period in 2008.

Aircraft movements decreased by 7.2% whilst the seat capacity decreased by 6.8%. The seat load factor decreased from 68.9% to 65.9% during the past six months. Cargo and Mail activity decreased by 12.2% for a total of 8,119 tons handled.

AirMalta represented 56.7% of the market share equivalent to 710,070 passenger movements whereas Ryanair carried 14.8% equivalent to 185,279 passenger movements. Easyjet has registered an increase of 24% which translates into a total of 71,992 passenger movements to date. Emirates also increased its figures considerably registering an increase of 48% represented by 52,056 passenger movements as against 35,275 for the same period last year.

The traditional markets of UK, Italy and Germany are still in the lead though registering a decrease of 10.7%, 3.7% and 17.2% respectively.

In the aftermath of the considerable drop in May and June, MIA has announced a revised end of year forecast of circa 2.9 million passengers or -6.8%. However the overall performance is better than that registered in the same period of 2007 and more importantly the situation so far, reflects only slightly below the recorded European average.
