The second edition of the Gozo Green Energy Expo – an environmental initiative of the Leone Philharmonic Society in Victoria, has been opened by Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri.

He said that this event has regional importance because it will be exhibiting in Gozo the latest developments for alternative sustainable energy solutions, which is relevant because Gozo depends a lot on imported energy.

“I am confident that Gozo can become a leader in sustainable energy solutions, and contribute to Malta’s general efforts towards a greener future,” said Minister Camilleri.

The Minister spoke about the InCircle project, through which a reservoir with a capacity of over 500 cubic meters of water was built, helping farmers in watering their agricultural products towards the sides of Santa Lucija.

Another project is that of the multi-modal hub in Ta’ Xhajma, were on completion it will be offering a free Park and Ride service through six electric buses, as well as a recreational and green space for the Gozitan community, and will include Smartflowers to generate electricity.

He mentioned the BioBlu project through which, EkoGozo together with the University of Malta and the University of Catania, are working to reduce the effects of microplastics that pollute our beaches and seas and that have a negative effect on fauna and the food chain and all this through the latest technology.

There is also the MedWet project, the Minister said, which has just won an honour from the Greening the Islands Awards in Gran Canaria, through which research is being carried out on the efficiency of water use for irrigation as well as on what effect the water of New Water has on plant growth when compared to rainwater.

The Minister recalled how on a European level, Gozo was also chosen as one of the 100 cities to become Climate-Neutral. He explained that this involves changing the way we use energy and also how we travel from and to Gozo and in Gozo itself.

The Minister praised the Leone Philharmonic Society for their work and dedication in organising this event and encouraged everyone to attend.

The exhibition is being staged in the first Conference and Exhibition Center in Gozo, financed through European funds.
