According to the Medical Association of Malta, it has calculated that over €390 million has been paid to Vitals, and Steward for the hospitals concession from 2016 to 2023, “as extracted from the Malta government budget estimates from 2016 to 2023.”
The figures the MAM quote are for the Gozo General Hospital and Karin Grech Hospital.
In a statement on Sunday, the MAM said that in 2016 there was the first payment of €16 million, however in 2017, this shot up to €33.5 million, of which €23.4 million was for GGH and €10 million for Karin Grech Hospital.
In 2018, it went up again to €40.2 million, of which €28.1 million was for GGH and €12 million for Karin Grech. There was yet another increase in 2019 when €44 million was paid, with €31 million for GGH and €13 million for Karin Grech.
The amounts kept rising and in 2020 payment for the concessionaires went up to €46.5 million, with €31 million once again for GGH and €15.5 million for Karin Grech. The in 2021 it rose to €61.6 million, with €35.6 million for GGH and €26 million for Karin Grech.
Then in 2022 the figure the Government paid Steward increased again and amounted to €69 million, with €46 million for GGH and €23 million for Karin Grech.
This year, the budget documents supplied by the MAM show that some €79.5 million was allocated for Steward on the concessionaires.
The figure shown for GGH for 2023 is €50.4 million, while €29.1 million was for Karin Grech Hospital.
On the 24th of February, Mr Justice Francesco Depasquale, in the Civil Court annulled the validity of the Vitals Global Healthcare contract. The three hospitals, including the Gozo General Hospital, should now be returned to the Government.
In his decision Mr Justice Francesco Depasquale stated that the Government “had a duty and obligation to make a rescission of all the contracts.”
The three hospitals are Gozo General Hospital, Saint Luke’s Hospital, and the Karin Grech Rehabilitation Hospital.
