The Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) has voiced is dismay over the court ruling today to refuse a BirdLife Malta request to not open the season and instead granted Malta’s hunters permission – “flying in the face of the EC Birds Directive yet again.”
CABS said that this means that the season is now open for both Quail (2400 birds) and Turtle-dove (1500 birds), with the season running until the 30th of April – while birds are attempting to reach their breeding grounds in Europe.
Each bird taken has to be reported to the authorities and once the quota is reached the hunting season has to close.
However, in the last two weeks alone, CABS said that its teams have witnessed “dozens of incidents of illegal Turtle-dove shooting and it is clear that a significant number of the quota has already been exhausted illegally.”
The organisation stated that Turtle-dove have declined by >80% in just the last 30 years. Meanwhile, CABS said that the FKNK hunters’ federation has wished its members a “fruitful hunting season.”
It seems the courts are as corrupt as the government. It also seems the EU is hopeless.
Each bird taken has to be reported to the authorities and once the quota is reached the hunting season has to close.
