The first eco-friendly cafes for feeding stray cats and dogs on Gozo have been inaugurated by Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri and the Prime Minister’s wife Dr Lydia Abela.
The three machines will be placed in the Victoria parking area, the Marsalforn parking area, and Mgarr Marina at Zewwieqa. These spots were chosen according to the number of cat colonies in the surrounding areas, the Minister said.
The Animal Welfare – EcoGozo Directorate within the Ministry for Gozo, which has introduced the new animal cafes, said that they make it possible for people to dispose of empty plastic bottles, while providing food for stray cats and dogs
This is helping to reduce the number of dumped plastic bottles, while at the same time feeding the strays that are loved by so many, the Minister said.
The Minister explained that the food goes into bowls in the lower part of the machine, which are eco-friendly and work through solar energy.
Dr Lydia Abela said that through such ideas animal rights can be elevated to the next level in our country. “From plastic, which is so damaging to the environment, this positive project is giving food for the animals, while also helping the environment.”
The Prime Minister’s wife said this new initiative ties in with the plans for creating more parks dog and cat cafes in our localities. “This is the way forward.”
Minister Camilleri also announced that the Ministry for Gozo will be launching an initiative to support the feeders of several cat colonies in Gozo, encouraging them to register with Animal Welfare, including to register their colonies, to be issued with free neutering vouchers for cats, as well as food for registered cats and neutering.
During the launch held in the Animal Welfare Section, at the Experimental Farm, Xewkija, Minister Clint Camilleri and Dr Lydia Abela visited the animals on site.
In addition, they also presented vouchers to feeders so they could get food for the stray cats and dogs.

it’s all just a big fat PR exercise – nobody really cares……………… where is the 24 hour 7 days a week animal ambulance service? the whole thing is a photo opportunity – nothing more………….
