The friendship between the village of Qala and Canale Monterano, which started in 2017, continued to renew when a group of Qala residents together with Qala Local Council representatives attended a WINGS project at the twin village.

The WINGS project – Ways to Innovate and Nurture Genuine Solidarity – was held at the Municipality of Canale Monterano, in the Italian region of Lazio and was financed through European Union funds.

The delegation from Qala, including Mayor Paul Buttigieg, were able to attend conferences together with other delegates from Canale Monterano and from Hungary.

Topics discussed included the Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukraine war.

They also had the opportunity to meet a member of the Italian Parliament, visit historical and cultural sites in the region of Canale Monterano, in the city of Rome, Tivoli and Bracciano lake. They enjoyed traditional Italian cuisine, as well as cuisine which is found only in Canale Monterano.

Some of the delegates experienced agri tourism and all delegates were invited to guided tours of the national park which includes the ghost town of Monterano and a large forest with wild animals and water falls and sulphur springs.

The Qala Mayor, on behalf of the Council, expressed his gratitude to the Mayor, Council of Canale Monterano and to all the volunteers of the village “who with great dedication did their utmost to welcome us in their village.”
