Qala Mayor Paul Buttigieg has said that he was “disappointed” that the Qala Local Council was “not invited to attend” Friday’s visit by Prime Minister Robert Abela to the village football ground.

Writing on Facebook, the Mayor said that “in fact I received a telephone call when the visit was almost over,” and “ended up attending in my work clothes.”

On Friday, the Prime Minister and Minister for Gozo, together with committee members of the Qala Football Club visited the upgraded football ground we have in Qala, Buttigieg said.

The Mayor went on to say that “as you know, this ground has been out of use for several years, the reason being that it needed a major upgrade. Qala Local Council does not have the type of funds required for this type of project.”“Thanks to the Ministry for Gozo there was financing and commissioning for the extensive works required, so that our children and youth can have an appropriate place to practice and play football,” he added

Buttigieg said that “during the past years, as a Mayor representing Qala Local Council, I signed various applications and contracts so that Qala Football Club can make use and carry out work in the ground and surroundings because it forms part of the Council’s property.”

The Qala Mayor concluded by saying that he was “satisfied that the dream for a decent ground had become a reality” and “as a Council we always unanimously agreed that the ground is important for Qala residents and that is why we always approved every application that was submitted to us.”
