The Gozo Regional Council, has said that it applauds the remarkable strides achieved by both governmental and non-governmental entities in advancing LGBTQI+ rights and services on the island.

In a statement on Monday, it said that Europride on Gozo’s shores marks an extraordinary milestone in our island’s LGBTQI+ history – a history that now stands on the “precipice of transformation.”

The Council stated that “the resounding success of the Gozo Pride March and the Europride concert at Pjazza Indipendenza serves as poignant symbols of the evolving attitudes of both our government and our people towards the LGBTQI+ community.”

It is with great satisfaction that the Council said, that it acknowledges the significant enhancements in LGBTQI+ services over recent years.From the establishment of the Qawsalla Hub by LGBTI+ Gozo to the establishment of a regular Genitourinary Medicine Clinic in Gozo (GU Clinic), “our region has witnessed a marked improvement in healthcare accessibility for LGBTQI+ individuals,” the Council said.

The Council noted that the increased inclusion of comprehensive sexual education for 15-year-olds is paving the way for a more tolerant and inclusive society, where diversity is celebrated and respected.

The council also highlighted the great initiatives by NGOs such as the collaboration between The Jam Project and Checkpoint Malta which offer regular free testing for HIV.

The Gozo Regional Council concluded by calling for increased collaboration among government entities, “a bolstering of educational efforts, a further improvement of health services and a more embracing stance from our local community.”

The Gozo Regional Council is comprised of the 14 local councils in the Gozo Region.
