In April 2009, the full-time gainfully occupied population was practically unchanged, while the registered unemployed increased by 1,124 when compared to the corresponding month last year.

This news release presents labour market data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) for April 2009. In the month under review, the labour supply increased by 1,106 over the corresponding month in 2008. This resulted from an increase of 1,124 registered unemployed and a decrease of 18 in the full-time gainfully occupied population.

When compared to the corresponding month in the preceding year, full-time employment in manufacturing [NACE 15-37] declined by 1,946. Increases in full-time jobs by sector were recorded as follows: 367 in wholesale and retail trade [NACE 50-52], 240 in transport, storage and communication [NACE 60-64], 300 in health and social work [NACE 85] and 1,239 in real estate, renting and business activities [NACE 70-74].

Year on year, the number of females employed on a full-time basis went up by 1,056 while their male counterparts dropped by 1,074.

In the twelve months to April 2009, the private sector increased its employment levels by 1,338 persons. On the other hand, the number of employees in the public sector decreased by 1,356, the majority of this decline occurring in the building and repair of ships [NACE 35]. Part-time Employment

In the month under review, total part-time employment rose by 2,443 when compared to April 2008. This increase comprised 1,124 persons with a part-time job as their secondary occupation. and 1,319 persons with a part-time activity as their primary job.
