Dar San Guzepp home for the elderly in Ghajnsielem will start welcoming the first elderly residents “in a few more weeks,” Gozo and Planning Minister Clint Camilleri has said.

The Minister said that this March the home, built on more than three acres, will welcome the first 120 elderly residents through its doors.

“In a few more days applications will open for all Gozitans who wish to enter this home for the elderly,” announced Minister Camilleri.

The Minister was visiting the site in Ghajnsielem, a project that will be “completed in a few more weeks,” with the works of M&Es, finishings and furnishings “now almost all completed.”

Camilleri said, “in about another month Dar San Guzepp will start operating. During the last five months we have kept our word and the works will not only be finished but we will be at a stage to start operating.”

The long-awaited Dar San Guzepp will consist of 120 beds all en suite room, spread over four levels, with views of the countryside and the sea.

The Minister explained that it “will be of the highest standard and fully accessible to all, consist of large areas of social spaces as well as outdoor green spaces.”

Natalie Briffa Farrugia, the Chairperson of Vassallo Group, encouraged the elderly and their relatives to apply for the home, which will offer “the best services for elderly people.”

The agreement between the Gozo Ministry and the Diocese in Gozo was signed in May 2013, when in a joint statement they said, that they are “both aware of the need for a home for the elderly, which will enable them to live life independently, in a wonderful environment, while also being given a quality service to be able to live a comfortable life.”

It was explained that “the home will contain 70 rooms and 140 bed and all with the the wonderful views of Fort Chambray, Xatt l-Ahmar, the Gozo Channel across to Malta and the Gozo countryside.”

The Gozo Ministry said at that time that, “the home may also be able to take foreign elderly residents, which could start a new niche area in Gozo. Preliminary discussions have already started with foreign interests in this regard.”

The then Minister for Gozo Anton Refalo visited the former site of St Joseph Home in Ghajnsielem, no date was given for commencement of works, or when it was due to be completed.

Work then started on the demolition of the existing building in February 2015.

Since then, work had stopped and started, with calls for it to be completed or at the very least, updates on expected completion.
