Gozo Minister and Planning Minister Clint Camilleri has said that the Marsalforn Breakwater project is “still planned to be built.”
He added that the technical reports related to the Environmental Impact Assessment as requested by the Environment and Resources Authority are still “currently being examined.”
The Minister was replying to a Parliamentary Question put by Opposition Spokesperson for Gozo Alex Borg as to whether the breakwater was still planned to be built, and if so a time-frame and at what stage it had reached.
In November last year, Minister Camilleri had also advised that the completed reports were being analysed in case of any amendments needed, they will be made before the same reports are officially sent to the ERA.
The complete project, which was launched in March 2021, is for a coastal defence system at Marsalforn Bay consisting of the reconstruction of Santa Marija breakwater, construction of a rubble mound berm on the Menqa site, two rubble mound groins at the valley outfall and replenishment of the Marsalforn beach.
Last year, geotechnical investigations were carried out at the site where the breakwater is planned to be constructed, at a cost of €214,434.00 excluding VAT. The results were integrated in the compilation of the Environmental Impact Assessment.
