The National Statistics Office has released the Transport Statistics 2023 for the reference year of 2022.

It found that once again Gozo registered the highest number of vehicles per 1,000 residents at 1,053. This was down slightly on 2021 when the figure was 1,064.

With reference to sea transport, the average rate of passengers and vehicles per trip crossing between Malta and Gozo amounted to 140 and 48 respectively. This was up on 2021 when the figures were 116 and 45 respectively.

The other salient points are shown below:

Sea Transport in 2022 – Passengers carried between Valletta and The Three Cities totalled 421,944, while those carried between Valletta and Sliema totalled 688,487.

The stock of vessels registered under the Maltese flag amounted to 8,644.

Cruise liner embarkations from Malta increased by 63,187 and passenger landings in Malta increased by 62,359 over 2021.

Air Transport in 2022 – Passenger traffic at Malta International Airport reached a total of 5,861,640. The NSO noted that Italy and the UK remained the two most popular destinations in terms of total passengers’ movement, registering 1,322,699 and 1,060,264 passenger movements respectively.

Road Transport in 2022 – The number of reported traffic accidents increased by 1,578 over the previous year, reaching 15,713, with 34.2% of these accidents recorded in the Northern Harbour district.

Traffic casualties increased by 5.0% over 2021. Injuries sustained by 11 drivers, one passenger, 15 pedestrians and a horse sulky rider proved fatal.

The stock of licensed motor vehicles increased at an average net rate of 33 vehicles per day.

Passenger cars accounted for 74.7% of total licensed motor vehicles but e-kick scooters registered the largest increase over 2021.

58.7% of total licensed motor vehicles had petrol engines. Alternative powered motor vehicles registered an increase of 54.9% over 2021.

Newly licensed motor vehicles amounted to 23,016, or 9.4% more than 2021. 66.5% of newly licensed motor vehicles were new.

The number of licensed motor vehicles per 1,000 residents went down to 784 from 794 in 2021. The Northern Harbour registered the lowest ratio with 673 vehicles per 1,000 residents.

A total of 309 vehicles were stolen, this was an increase of 27.2% over 2021.

308,444 transport-related contraventions were issued by the Police, Wardens and Transport Malta. Speed cameras’ contraventions totalled 50,782 or an average of 139 per day.

36.8% of total driving licence holders were aged between 40 and 59 years. Public Transport commuters totalled 49,222,425, which was an increase of 39.8% over 2021.

Passenger cars were driven the most with 2,321 million km or 79.5% of the total distance travelled.
