The Gozo team from the Malta Rangers Unit have reported that two illegal trapping sites on Gozo have been dismantled.
The MRU said that, “a tourist noticed that a site near the cliff had nets and alerted our Rangers who reported the site when realising active trapping was occurring on site.”
One area was in Sannat, where nets were seen on site by an individual who reported it to the MRU. The Rangers said that, “a male was spotted in the hide and finches heard on site.”
The second area was at Ta’ Cenc, where the Gozo team said that “nets spotted on site and active trapping ongoing.”
The MRU added that in both cases Victoria Police was called for assistance and both trapping sites were dismantled and equipment confiscated.
“We wish to thank the District Police for their work to safeguard nature, on top of their district duties,” the MRU said.
The Malta Ranger Unit once again urged the Government “to acknowledge our call for Environmental Protection Unit Police in Gozo.”
It warned that “the environmental crime is thriving on the island and it’s in dire need of a specialised Unit.”
The MRU concluded by saying that, “our Gozo team of Rangers will continue to monitor daily in the remote areas. Any site spotted with nets and/or with active trapping will immediately be reported to Police.”
