The Malta Ranger Unit were alerted early Tuesday morning of a flamingo that had arrived and settled on the Gozo coast.
The Rangers and BirdLife Malta volunteers remained on site throughout yesterday and overnight to keep a watchful eye over it. They said that the bird looks quite healthy and should hopefully continue its journey shortly.
The MRU urged the public to not approach the flamingo and leave it be, so it gains the strength it needs. It’s a protected species and strictly illegal to disturb or handle.
”We already had a case of several dogs about to attack it, hence we urge dog owners to keep their dogs controlled when nearby,” the Rangers said.
”Appreciate nature and its wildlife,” the MRU said. ”We wish that our service to guard this majestic bird wasn’t needed, but it sadly is.”
”Let’s not see a repetition of the Xwejni case 2023 where a flamingo was shot in front of people. We won’t allow for that to happen again,” the Rangers said.
The Malta Ranger Unit also issued ”ánother reminder (2 years and going…) to the Government and Ministers Miriam Dalli and Clint Camilleri, that Gozo has no Environmental Protection Unit Police.”
It warned that, ”this gives environmental criminals 100% impunity.”
The Malta Ranger Unit also said that it needs more Ranger boots on the ground to be able to carry out similar exercises when need be.
