The Malta Ranger Unit were alerted early morning by members of the public that a bird was seen pacing along the beach at Ramla Bay, Gozo, seemingly injured.
A volunteer from the Gozo MRU section arrived on site shortly afterwards and managed to catch it, whilst Rangers from Malta were also on their way.
MRU said that BirdLife Malta was informed and the bird, which was identified as an Avocet, was handed over to them to be checked by the Government veterinarian.
The MRU said that “there were no visual signs of shotgun injuries, hence we hope for a full recovery.”
The NGO said that “people at the beach were pleased to be able to observe such a beautiful bird, sightings that our work and the work of other eNGOs will enable more of.”
“If you see an injured wild bird, stay on site and keep your distance and alert BirdLife Malta. Our Rangers who now are available in Gozo would assist other NGOs when need be,” the MRU said.
The MRU concluded by “reminding the Government (2 years counting…) that Gozo still doesn’t have any Environmental Protection Unit Police Officers stationed on the island. This is needed to protect the Gozitan wildlife and habitats.”
