The Environment and Resources Authority has said that with regards to the contamination of Hondoq Bay, it is “considering action through administrative fines against the fish farm operator for breaching of environmental permit conditions which resulted in this episode.”
In a statement, the Authority said that the Federation of Fish Farmers had cleared up the slime and cleaned the oil slick from the sand at Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay.
The ERA said that once source had been indicated, it had immediately coordinated a clean-up operation in consultation with the Gozo Ministry and Qala Local Council.
The Authority stated that “it carries out monitoring inspections on a regular basis in Malta’s seas and bays in order to safeguard the environment, particularly in areas under the protection of environmental laws.”
The ERA added that it is “committed to safeguarding the environment by taking immediate action against those caught polluting, as it has done in the past days.”
The Authority invited the public to call on 2292 3500 if they becomes aware of any contamination.

What’s to “consider”? The people responsible for this appalling pollution should be heavily fined – no question and the fish farms relocated so this does not happen again. The fish farms were previously relocated because of the same thing happening in Malta.
