The third turtle nest – this time at Ramla Bay in Gozo – made its grand entrance to the hatching season by hatching during the spectacular stroboscopic thunderstorm of Wednesday night.
Nature Trust – FEE Malta – Gozo Section said that over the course of the night, 68 hatchlings emerged and found their way to the sea.
Over the previous two days the volunteers on watch said that they had noticed that part of the pipping/hatching process had started as there was movement underneath the sand.
However, “nobody was expecting the hatching to occur on Day 46, on what was probably one of the most energy-filled nights atmospherically,” the NTM Gozo Section said.
Nest three was laid on the 13th of July, after the turtle had tried nesting a couple of nights before without success.
Nature Trust – FEE Malta – Gozo Section thanked all the volunteers on duty, other volunteers who pitched in, and ERA officials for their help during the hatching process. The nest will continue to be monitored for a few more nights.
