On Friday, following the second night from hatching, Wildlife Rescue Team Malta with Nature Trust – FEE Malta – Gozo Section inspected Nest 6 for 2024 in Ramla l-Hamra Gozo. The nest contained a total of 93 eggs.

The inspection was carried out due to increased risks associated with bad weather and waves and was in the presence of Nature Trust officials and ERA officials..

The Team said that out of the 93 eggs, 23 were not fertilised. From the remaining, 61 hatched successfully (with 14 being found alive but stuck inside the nest, and were subsequently released), and 9 had started hatching but died in the nest. From their presentation, they most probably passed away due to sea water seeping into the nest and cutting off their air supply.

From the total nest there was a 66% hatch rate. Out of the fertilised eggs, 87% hatched.

The Team stressed that “none of this work would be possible without the over 300 volunteers between Malta and Gozo, who monitor the nests day and night.”
