The Superintendence of Public Health has warned that following information received through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed, the ginger powder product as described below must not be consumed since it contains elevated levels of Benzo(a)pyrene which result in high levels of total Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs).
It explained that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic compounds which may form from industrial processes, such as food processing (like heating, drying, and smoking), and also through processes like grilling and roasting.
A number of these compounds may be genotoxic and carcinogenic and hence exposure to them must be kept as low as reasonably achievable. Benzo(a)pyrene belongs to the group of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.??
