The community of San Lawrenz came together over the weekend to commemorate and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Local Council in San Lawrenz.

During the evening, Deputy Mayor Clyde Cauchi was presented with an official award as a surprise by The Malta Records as the youngest male Deputy Mayor ever elected in Malta. Clyde was just one week away from his 19th birthday on the day of the oath.

The celebration event was held in the newly renovated Parish Centre Hall, which was co-financed by EU funds.

During the evening those gathered paid tribute to all those Councillors who served the village of San Lawrenz.

The non-Maltese speaking residents were awarded certificates after attending and sitting for an examination during a course in the Maltese Language organised by the Council as part of its integration programme.

In a speech by Mayor Noel Formosa, he recalled the importance of the Local Council in the community life of the village as well as the Council’s vision to continue to be the catalyst for change.

The evening was animated with music on the violin by Pierre Louis Attard, accompanied by Mro Colin Attard on piano and by poems by the young Gozitan Poet Matthew Sultana.

Present for the occasion was Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri, who praised the Council for its achievements and also for innovative ideas such as that of the course in Maltese for non-Maltese speakers.

At the conclusion of the event those present were treated with a reception prepared by Ta’ Cangura Folk Group.
