The Malta Ranger Unit said that a “notorious trapping site in Sannat, Gozo, which our Rangers have reported several times for night time trapping, use of illegal decoys and electronic bird callers, has again become the subject for Police intervention.”

On Sunday, MRU said that its Rangers in Gozo came across the site with Golden Plover and Lapwing callers on full volume. “They were heard over 400m away from the site.”

Victoria Police were called on site by the Rangers, who said that, “although the Officers walked in on the site whilst the callers were full on, they didn’t manage to locate the illegal callers and speakers.”

The MRU added that “the accused switched the callers off as soon as the cctvs showed enforcement on site.”

However, just two hours later, the site once again had the electronic callers on full volume causing several annoyed residents of Sannat to report them to the Malta Ranger Unit, it said.

Police were called once again by MRU Rangers and, they said, “we are still awaiting an update on the case to see if the callers this time were located and confiscated.”

The MRU stated that “not only are such illegal callers unsustainability and causing harm to biodiversity, they are also a nuisance to people trying to enjoy some peace and quiet in their homes.”

The Malta Ranger Unit went on to say that “this site in particular shows the impunity of the few, to not only cause harm to our nature and its biodiversity, but also to disturb others only to benefit themselves.”

“It also shows how little respect they have for the Authority and how much they enjoy the impunity given to them by the lack of will from Minister Clint Camilleri to solve this situation in Gozo,” the MRU concluded.
