Rangers from the Malta Ranger unit have participated in the Portuguese conference ‘Vigilantes Da Natureza 2025,’ after having been invited to speak about their work as an NGO in Malta to safeguard habitats and fauna – the challenges and the beauty of the island.

The MRU spoke about the challenges of being a Ranger in a small island state, but also highlighted the beauty of the island and its potential for better quality tourism.

It was a full 3-day programme where MRU Rangers (together with hundreds of Environmental Police, Rangers and others) learnt more about Biodiversity and Conservation in two large National Parks, as well as guided tours in the Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Marsh Natural Reserve (Portugal) and Doñana National Park (Spain).

The MRU said that they both have a history of conflicts, but now successfully form part of a thriving community of avifauna and flora in balance with restricted human activities. “Preserving natural areas, is not only safeguarding avifauna and habitats, it’s ultimately saving the humanity.”

It was showcased how Enforcement (using drones and K9s) Conservation and Education have to work hand in hand. The MRU stressed that “it was evident how important it is that the Authorities invest in all these three pillars for a successful management of Natural Sites.”

The MRU said that its Rangers are now back with “more knowledge, more support by international colleagues and encouragement to continue the fight to safeguard our island.”

The Malta Ranger Unit expressed its thanks to the participating Rangers, Environmental Police and other representatives from Portuguese Authorities who welcomed MRU Rangers to their “family.”
