The Left think-tank organisation Zminijietna has said in a statement that it is “highly concerned” with the ReArm Europe plan.

“The EU’s strategy is much more on military buildup rather than diplomacy to end war in Ukraine,” warned Zminijietna – Voice of the Left

It added that, “another concern is the allocation of €800bn EU funds to further militarise Europe. As things stand this EU investment in militarisation will surely be taken from the social and environmental needs of European citizens.”

Zminijietna pointed out that, “this issue on the allocation of €800bn towards militarisation will not be put for discussion and approval by the European Parliament. Those MEPs advocating for peace and diplomacy are being left out from this debate.”

The organisation stressed that with regards to Malta’s position on this issue, “we would have expected a stronger position. Malta as a neutral country could have abstained when the final vote was taken.”

Zminijietna concluded by saying “the European Left has condemned Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, which violates international law, from day one. However, it has also criticised the European Union’s strategy of “ruining” Russia (quoting Annalena Baerbock, German Minister of Foreign Affairs) militarily and economically, which was unrealistic from the outset. Instead, the EL has called for initiatives for a political solution to the conflicts between Russia and Ukraine and between Russia and NATO that underlie this war.”
