The Gozo University Group has wlcomed the installation of traffic lights, a new zebra crossing and clear signage on Liesse Street, Valletta, in front of the Gozo Fast Ferry terminal.

The new additions “have significantly improved pedestrian safety in the area,” said the Group.

These changes follow GUG’s call for urgent action after last month highlighting safety concerns when the installation of a railing obstructed the previously used pedestrian crossing.

In response, Transport Malta had said that it was carrying out works to “improve traffic flows and pedestrian safety” at the Ta’ Liesse area in Valletta.

It said that the previous pedestrian crossing was located too close to the tunnel entrance, creating a bottleneck and posing a risk to commuters crossing from and to the Gozo Fast Ferry Terminal. “For this reason, it was removed. In its place, a new and safer system is being developed, including two synchronised pelican crossings and improved signage.”

The Gozo University Group concluded by thanking the Infrastructure Ministry for responding swiftly, and “we remain committed to advocating for safe public spaces.”
