Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo was invited to the St Theresa Primary School in Kercem, where he was presented with a project carried out by children and educators together with Gozitan shepherds and farmers.

It was explained that the students conducted a survey with 33 farmers and villagers, where they were able to see their work up close, while asking them about what gives them satisfaction in their work.

They presented the Minister some suggestions that emerged from this survey on how this sector can be further improved.

These students are also participating in the Let’s Talk Farming programme run by the Government to promote the agricultural and food production sectors in our country’s primary schools.

Minister Anton Refalo reiterated the importance of children taking an interest in farming from a young age. “That is why as a Government we are continuing to bring the sector closer to children, in schools and even in their homes, so that when they eat and drink healthy and fresh food and milk, they appreciate that behind all this there is work, often hard work.”

Also present during this visit were members of the Dairy Farmers’ Cooperative, who spoke to the students about the cattle and dairy sector.

During the same visit, Minister Refalo inaugurated a newly renovated garden within the school and planted a commemorative tree. In this garden, students are being taught how to cultivate agricultural products as well as raising some animals.

Through this hands-on approach students are continuing to learn in a practical way about gardening, farming and the importance of local food production.
