Data from the National Statistics Office today show that the annual rate of inflation in May as measured by the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices rose to 2.7% from 2.6% in April.

The NSO noted that the highest annual inflation rates in May were recorded in education (5.6%) and transport(5.6%).

The lowest annual inflation rates were registered in communication (-3.6%) and clothing and footwear (-0.7%).

The largest upward contribution to the overall annual inflation was measured in the food and non-alcoholic beverages (+0.72 percentage points) largely due to higher prices of meat.

The NSO said that the largest downward contribution was recorded in the communication index (-0.13 percentage points) mainly reflecting the lower prices of mobile phone equipment.
