Situation of public safety in Gozo worsened significantly in recent years - PNThe Nationalist Party said that in recent years, safety in our country has taken a “serious hit.” The PN added that it has consistently spoken about the “deteriorating situation regarding public safety in Malta” – “This problem has now clearly spread to Gozo as well.”

It warned that “the situation in Gozo has worsened significantly in recent years. The PN has raised the alarm more than once, urging Government to increase police presence and security on the island. Yet these calls have continuously fallen on deaf ears.”

In a statement, the PN said that “following yesterday’s incident in Mgarr, Gozo, which left a person hospitalised with serious injuries, it is time for the Government to wake up, open its eyes, and most importantly, find the political will to guarantee that the Maltese and Gozitan people can feel safe and secure in their own country.”

The PN stressed that “one of the biggest contributors to the lack of safety in our towns and villages is the absence of police stations. Here too, the PN has made repeated pressure for the Minister to ensure that every locality is served by an operational station.”

It reiterated that “we are now in a situation where there are more villages without police stations than those with one. The entire island of Gozo is currently being served by just two stations: one in Victoria and the other in Mgarr. This is not how a competent Government safeguards its people.”

The PN insisted that “the Labour Government has cultivated a mentality of impunity where those who behave badly suffer no real consequences.”

“It is the Government’s duty to reverse this mentality and immediately begin providing all the necessary resources so that the Maltese and Gozitans can live in their country without fear,” concluded the PN.

The statement was signed by Darren Carabott Shadow Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Reforms and Alex Borg Shadow Minister for Gozo.
