To mark World Clean-up Day, which is celebrated on the 20th of September, 53 ‘Clean Up Days’ will be held across Malta and Gozo.

On Gozo, they will be held in Fontana; Ghajnsielem; Ghasri; Kercem; Munxar; Nadur; Qala; San Lawrenz; Xaghra; Xewkija and Zebbug.

These will be organised by the respective Local Councils with financial assistance from the Local Government Division. This was announced by the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli and the Director General for the Local Government Division, Emil Vassallo.

Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli said that the Government is continuing to support Local Councils in keeping their localities cleaner. She said that this initiative will also help to raise greater awareness about the importance of cleaner localities.

“The Government together with the Local Councils are doing their utmost to keep our localities clean. These activities are just a symbol of this work that is being done daily, but they aim to raise more awareness among the public. Therefore, my appeal is for the residents of the respective localities to participate in these activities so that they appreciate the work that is done daily and also raise awareness about the importance of having a clean country,” said the Parliamentary Secretary.

The Parliamentary Secretary also noted how some of the Local Councils located along the country’s coast have chosen to go further and organise underwater cleaning activities. She stated that underwater waste is much more difficult to collect and therefore through these activities it is expected that more awareness will also be raised about how we should keep our seas clean.

The Director General of Local Government, Emil Vassallo, said that this was another successful scheme that the Division issued and that the Councils competed for in large numbers. He mentioned that from time to time various schemes are being issued through which the Local Councils are being more active and are in a position to carry out various infrastructural and cultural projects.

In Malta, the localities where the clean-ups will be organised are: Balzan; Mellieha; Mosta; Naxxar; San Gwann; St Paul’s Bay; Mtarfa; Birkirkara; Gzira; Gharghur; Iklin; Pieta; San Giljan; Sliema; Swieqi; Ta’ Xbiex; Birgu; Bormla; Haz-Zabbar; Fgura; Floriana; Kalkara; Paola; Tarxien; Qormi; Birzebbuga; Gudja; Ghaxaq; Marsa; Marsaskala; Marsaxlokk; Santa Lucia; Santa Venera; Zebbug; Siggiewi; Dingli; Kirkop; Mqabba; Qrendi; Rabat Malta and Safi; Zurrieq.
