The Malta Ranger Unit said that during one of its patrols in Gozo, “a site in Sannat was seen with visible nets but no trapper nearby.”
The Rangers said that “once it was confirmed that nets were unattended, the Gozo Police were called to assist with the removal.”
The MRU stressed that nets left on site are exposing any kind of wildlife to danger of entrapment leading to injuries or death. “It’s unfortunately not uncommon to see.”
The MRU urged the public “to alert us if they stumble across such nets when out trekking in nature. Sometimes they might be abandoned nets on a site which isn’t used anymore.”
The Malta Ranger Unit expressed its thanks to the Police Officers “who came over for their swift action on the matter.”
“Unfortunately, environmental crimes are more present in Gozo due to the fact that (although known by decision-makers) there is no Environmental Protection Unit Police,” stated the MRU.
It added that “the district Police have to deal with these crimes, which they many times aren’t trained to handle, nor can prioritise on top of other duties.”
The MRU concluded by saying that, “we have asked for EPU Police to be implemented on Gozo, but have been ignored for years. Impunity reigns and Gozo remains one of the most challenging places in our country to report environmental crimes.”
The MRU also tagged the European Court of Justice, as well as Environment Minister Miriam Dalli and Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, who is also responsible for hunting.
