The 31st anniversary of Dinja Wahda was celebrated by BirdLife Malta yesterday at its annual awards ceremony held in Malta.

The event recognised the achievements of 63 primary schools, four middle and secondary schools, 787 teachers, and 12,560 students from across Malta and Gozo who took part in the Dinja Wahda programme during the past year.

Since its launch in 1994, Dinja Wa?da has become BirdLife Malta’s flagship environmental education programme, run in collaboration with the Education Directorate and supported by our partners in education, Bank of Valletta, who also attended the event.

Guests were welcomed by the Flamingo mascot before enjoying fun activities coordinated by our public engagement, conservation, and reserves teams to promote BirdLife Malta’s work and raise awareness about the urban birds living around us.

This year’s ceremony also introduced new initiatives for middle and secondary schools, updates on the programme’s accreditation process, and success stories from the growing network of nature schools.

Speakers highlighted the importance of keeping children engaged with the natural world, especially as open spaces continue to disappear due to development. The event featured presentations, video highlights, and awards for schools showing outstanding environmental commitment.

Through Dinja Wahda, teachers integrate nature-based activities into lessons, while students learn how to safeguard Malta’s biodiversity through hands-on experiences and community action.

The programme continues to expand, offering both in-class and outdoor learning through an online platform at dinjawahda.birdlifemalta.org
