Restoration has been completed on the 17th century oil on canvas painting “St. Joseph with the Child Jesus” by renowned artist Mattia Preti, which is housed in the Sannat Parish Church.

The restoration was made possible through collaboration between the Sannat Parish Church and the Ministry for Gozo and Planning.

Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri said “this significant project, carried out over the past few months by a dedicated team of professional restorers, has breathed new life into one of our island’s artistic and cultural treasures, while ensuring its preservation for future generations.”

He added that “this painting by Mattia Preti is the fourth one that we know of here in our parishes and through this restoration it will be able to be enjoyed by the public, by all those who are visiting this island, and in particular our churches which are also monuments with various artifacts and which are exhibited here. I believe that our churches in addition to their primary, religious purpose, have a lot of historical heritage that is important for us all to appreciate.”

It was explained that the restoration process included meticulous documentation, advanced conservation techniques, and careful aesthetic integration, all aimed at protecting the integrity and beauty of this unique work of art. From cleaning the centuries-old varnish, to restoring previous damage, to manufacturing a replica frame that respects the painting’s historical context, each step was carried out with great precision and with full respect for Preti’s original vision.

The Gozo Minister said that “initiatives such as these are crucial for the protection and appreciation of our artistic heritage, and allow both Gozitan residents and tourists to enjoy these masterpieces in their authentic setting. Parish churches across Gozo, such as Sannat, are like living museums accessible to all and filled with unique works that tell our common history.”

Minister Clint Camilleri concluded by thanking the restoration team for their professionalism and dedication and affirmed that the Ministry remains fully committed to supporting and funding restoration projects for the benefit of both today’s society and future generations.
