Three kilometres of rubble walls are to be restored and rebuilt that border fields overlooking the Ramla Valley.
The €2.2 million project was launched by Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri together with the Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi.
The project will be implemented by the Ministry for Gozo through the Eco-Gozo Directorate and is co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
Ramla l-Hamra is a popular place for locals, Maltese and tourists, said Minister Camilleri, therefore the agricultural landscape needs to be cared for and protected. Rubble walls, that over time have collapsed, will be rebuilt.
When completed, 8,900 cubic metres of rubble walls will have been restored or rebuilt, the Minister said.
He explained that works in the Ramla Valley area will extend from Triq ir-Ramla, Triq ta ‘Xurdin, Triq ta’ Ghajn Hosna, Triq l-Inzul tal-Francizi, Triq ir-Ramla il-Hamra, up to Dahla ta ‘Ghajn Damma.
Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said that this European-funded project will be preserving Gozo’s national heritage through the restoration of rubble walls, as well as 250 metres of Roman steps.
He went on to say that the rubble walls, in addition to enhancing the Gozitan environment, have a function of preserving the soil and thus will be of benefit to the surrounding farmers.
The Parliamentary Secretary concluded by saying that “through this project we are respecting the ecology of Gozo, while we are looking more closely at the historical and environmental heritage of this island.”
How can it possibly cost 733 euros to rebuild 1 meter of wall?
I have suggested previously and still do and insist to the present time, that Gozo surrounded by Valleys all around the Island, should & have to install Cascading Water Reservoirs for Water enchantments at the numerous Valleys that Gozo enjoy.
This way rain water which at present is being lost by only cascading to the sea, will be able to perforate into the underground as well as serving Farmers for the required water which we do extremely lack during the Summer Months.
Till the present time there is only one water reservoir which is located in Marsalforn Valley. This example should be followed in all valleys.
