‘Woman and the Human Life’ was the theme chosen by European countries on the occasion of the Pro Life Day in 2010. Gozo joined other countries in the world to celebrate the 32 days for life through activity chosen by The Guzeppa Debono Home, which was attended by among others, Mrs Catherine Gonzi and Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo.
Pro-Life Day is celebrated in many countries in Europe on the first Sunday of February each year, with a view to promoting the value of life. This is the second year that Gozo, with the Guzeppa Debono Home, joined with these countries to celebrate this event while raising awareness and increasing knowledge about the value of life .
For this occasion a programme was prepared that included singing, drama and dance, and during which four keynote speakers addressed those present to convey their message. The themes chosen were particularly for women and human life in different contexts. These speakers included Mrs Catherine Gonzi, the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, Mayor of Victoria, Dr. Samuel Azzopardi and HE Mgr Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo. Also present was Ms. Maria Attard, Director of the Guzeppa Debono Home.
In her speech, Minister Debono praised the services rendered by the home, which is teaches awareness on the rights and duties of a young mother, protecting the rights of the child, as well as giving help to women who find themselves in difficulties. Added to that the performance of what is the eco-Gozo vision also takes account of the human aspect by promoting a programme of action leading to the quality of life in Gozo. Minister Debono also said that this will be done through advocacy and education regarding education for life, promoting clean entertainment while raising awareness about the responsibilities of protecting and respecting the individual and the rights of others.
The Guzeppa Debono Home was established 25 yearsago, from the 8 th of December 1985, with the aim of offering aid and shelter to unmarried mothers at the time of pregnancy until the baby is born. Over time the work from this home developed to offer several services especially in the social and educational field. The main work focuses on disseminating information and increasing awareness about the value and culture of life through counseling, seminars and other activities. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary since the establishment of this home, various activities will be organised aimed at creating greater awareness, especially among teenagers and young adults while delivering the message of protecting life since conception.
