In a first since the fast ferry service started, more than one million passengers used the service in a single year between Valletta and Mgarr, Gozo, the government said today.

In a statement the Ministry for Transport said that “with over 1,150,000 passengers by the end of November, 2025 reflects a new record and a substantial increase on last year’s numbers.”

It added that, “above all, these numbers confirm the need for this service and the importance of this means of transport in strengthening connectivity between different localities across the Maltese islands.”

The Ministry went on to say that these figures also reflect the importance of the investment being made to expand this service, with a number of new routes planned to come into operation during the coming year. “Connections between Malta and Gozo will be doubling as new fast ferry services to Gozo from Sliema and Bugibba come into operation.”

Minister for Transport Chris Bonett stressed the importance of looking to the sea as part of the transport solution of the future as it is an “efficient and reliable means of transport that offers a sustainable alternative.”

He said, “The government’s commitment is to continue investing in the ferry service, including an extension to the southern part of Malta to connect the entire east coast.”

The Minister explained that work is currently underway on a new ferry landing in Marsaskala which will eventually lead to a new service to Valletta.

Minister Bonett concluded by saying that “with investments in other services such as circular buses and park & rides, ferries are being integrated into a multi-modal transport system.”
