The Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) protection camps in Malta and Gozo have now come to an end.

CABS said that during its investigations over 380 live birds, mainly finches, were confiscated.

“We also caught and reported 26 poachers, and a total of 26 pairs of clap-nets were seized by the Police Environmental Unit (EPU),” said CABS.CABS concludes autumn action in Malta and Gozo, over 380 live birds confiscatedThe organisation said that since mid-September, more than 20 CABS volunteers have taken turns to monitor the passage and roosting sites of migratory birds of prey and later “carried out checks on bird trapping to uncover violations.”

CABS explained that Malta is an important stepping stone for migratory birds travelling along the central Mediterranean flyway via Italy towards Africa.

It stated that “despite clear warnings from the EU Commission, bird trapping on the island archipelago was once again permitted for purely ‘scientific’ purposes.”
