Housing in an ageing society was discussed in a recent meeting organised by the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD and the Housing Authority, which was also attended by representatives from The Foundation for Affordable Housing.
During the meeting, the Housing Authority shared valuable insights and information, including new data showing a significant increase in the ageing population, as well as proposals and schemes aimed at improving affordability, accessibility, and opportunities for independent living.
The MCESD added that the meeting also addressed innovative housing solutions, including community-based arrangements.
It said said that social partners expressed concerns about rising rents, the need for innovative housing solutions, and the challenge of properties that are too large for the needs of the elderly. They also called for greater public awareness, more flexible regulations, and sustainable initiatives, such as intergenerational and community-based projects.
MCESD went on to say that the meeting concluded with a “shared commitment to developing a strategy that ensures Malta’s housing system can meet the needs of all generations.”
