Nadur Local Council visits Zafferana Etnea as part of EU funded project

Nadur Local Council recently concluded a transformative trip to Zafferana Etnea, Sicily, as part of the EU-funded #CJAATNE project – A Collaborative Journey of Art, Agriculture, and Tradition.

The delegation enjoyed a packed programme that highlighted shared values and set the stage for enduring friendship between our communities.

The visit kicked off with a formal welcome at Zafferana Etnea Council, featuring presentations, official photos, and a symbolic gift exchange. Key activities blended the project’s core pillars: agricultural insights via beekeeping demonstrations and tastings at Oro dell’Etna; artistic inspiration from the Paintings Exhibition by Zafferana’s Artists Association; and cultural fusion through a Sicilian Food Night with traditional Maltese and Sicilian delights.

The Council said that these experiences pursued clear objectives: preserve cultural heritage, advance sustainable agriculture, and spark artistic collaboration. Nestled on Mount Etna’s slopes, Zafferana shared its volcanic apiculture and local crafts, while Nadur contributed governance perspectives and Mediterranean traditions. A highlight was last Sunday’s formal signing at Zafferana’s Council Hall – which the Council said, was a 5-year renewal of the twinning agreement with both Comune di Zafferana Etnea and Pro Loco. ”This pact promises continued support, joint events, and reciprocal initiatives.”

”This trip elevates our decade-long friendship into a structured, funded partnership,” the Council said. ”For Nadur, it means enriched local events, skill-sharing for farmers and artists, and youth opportunities that broaden horizons. Zafferana gains from Maltese networks, boosting agritourism and cultural visibility.”

Co-funded by the European Union’s Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) Programme, CJAATNE enabled this cross-border endeavour, aligning with EU goals of equality, rights, and unity.

The Nadur Local Council said that ”over the next five years, expect reciprocal visits, collaborative markets, and sustainability projects. This renewed twinning symbolises resilient European ties – proving that art, agriculture, and tradition can bridge islands and volcanoes for shared prosperity.
