The Malta Medical Students Association has said in statement that it welcomes the announcement of the construction of a new Barts medical school in Gozo.
However, the MMSA stressed that it had the number of questions on the matter, and during a meeting with the Parliamentary Secretary for Health Chris Fearne, he gave them the assurances they were seeking, assurances that the MMSA said, “are essential to maintain.”
Among those assurances sought by the MMSA was that the students at the new medical school made only minimal use of the facilities of Mater Dei. The Parliamentary Secretary also told the MMSA that the academic staff of the new medical school will include foreign teachers from the Queen Mary University.
The MMSA had voiced concern over the timings of the project, however, they said that Mr Fearne had assured them that the new medical school is set to open in September 2016, which will allow time for the construction of the new hospital, as well as promote it as for medical tourism.
MMSA concluded the statement by saying that it will be monitoring developments in this project, and that Parliamentary Secretary Fearne had promised to keep the MMSA updated on the situation, as an important stakeholder involved..
You do know that Barts Health is in special measures in the UK?
I think that fact should give some caution to this project.
Shocking failings were exposed at Whipps Cross hospital, one of the Trusts’ hospitals including the deaths of two unborn babies, a new mum and a child soon after birth, among 208 serious incidents last year. There have beenworrying delays across the trust for cancer patients and its rising £93million deficit. Barts chair Sir Stephen O’Brien, chief executive Peter Morris and chief nurse Kay Riley have all quit. I would be very concerned.
