Mikayla (Mikaela Bajada), a singer/songwriter from Gozo, has just released her new Maltese single release on 31st March.
The Maltese song, written by the singer herself together with Julie Pomorski, was released on on the 31st of March.
As described by Mikayla, ”this record – Wicc ta’ Grazzja – is very personal to me. Dedicated to my mother. Even as I write this post, I feel some anxiety because I can’t believe that I finally got to release this record. It is an emotional song for anyone going through a difficult time because of those around them and because of how much they suffer mentally.”
Mikayla is a 27-year old natural born singer from Gozo. From dancing to Kylie Minogue’s and Michael Jackson’s album back in 2001 to being a big fan of Eurovision, she ultimately performed in school concerts and mini musicals from a young age.
Artists like Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, and beFour became a huge inspiration to Mikayla in her musical career. Being a confident little girl on stage, her father supported Mikaela in taking vocal lessons and performing in competitions.
This led to her very first solo performance in 2008. Getting into auditions for various choirs like Stagecoach choir in 2004 and Joseph Calleja’s Children Choir in 2009, provided her with opportunities to perform on various television shows.
One of them being the Malta Junior Eurosong Contest 2009. This was a highlight in her career since she, together with her friend Francesca as a duet, won the Malta Junior Eurosong 2009 with their song ‘Double Trouble,’ taking them all the way to Ukraine to represent Malta at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, placing 8th. It was an experience of a lifetime from learning performance skills and building new friendships with the same interest.
Over the years, Mikaela’s voice started to mature which took her interest in performing with Theatre Choirs in various operas and musicals. Also, her passion in dancing didn’t fade away. At the age of 13, Mikaela joined the contemporary dance school “Naupaca Dance Factory.”
Mikaela continued to prove her singing abilities by doing versatile song covers on social media platforms and performed as a guest singer in live gigs at pubs with various local bands.
Eventually, Mikaela took a hiatus from official performances to focus on her educational studies. She started a nursing career at the age of 22. But this didn’t stop her from achieving her musical dreams. As soon as Mikaela graduated and settled into her Nursing career, she took the next big step – song writing.
She fulfilled her life-long dream and released her debut original song ‘One Day (For Real)’ under her new stage name MIKAYLA in 2023. Another original song ‘blue-eyed angel’ was then released in 2024, in memory of her childhood best friend.
