The Malta Ranger Unit is highlighting another beautiful shrub found on the Maltese Islands – the Mediterranean Thyme.
MRU said that although most people know about this low-growing shrub, few are aware that it has been protected by Maltese law since the 23rd of March, 1932. ”It’s illegal to pick or uproot the Mediterranean Thyme.”
The organisation explained that the SL.10.10 (Wild Thyme Protection) was announced as Government Notice 85 of 1932 in the Government Gazette after extensive and regular taking of the shrub to use for Christmas crib decoration.
The protection of this beautiful plant is the remit of the Agricultural Department, not on the Environment and Resources Authority, the MRU said.
Mediterranean Thyme plays an important ecological role. The MRU said that it is a vital source of nourishment for bees and attracts several species of butterflies.
