During routine inspections within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) said that its officers find many types of litter. During this inspection, a balloon was found at sea after it had floated away from a celebration.
”This serves as a reminder that litter from land can easily reach the sea and pose a risk to ecosystems and wildlife,” the ERA said.
New legislation entered into force in February banning the open-air release of balloons and plastic confetti.
The ERA reminded the public that under these new rules:
No more open-air release of any type of balloons is allowed.
No more open-air release of plastic confetti is allowed.
No more selling or using plastic confetti is allowed.
Balloons can still be used for celebrations, but they must be weighted down.
