History and food lovers are invited to a free Gozo library event next month with Liam Gauci, a Maltese historian and author, whose work has helped uncover Malta’s fascinating maritime past through the fragile pages of forgotten archives.
In this illustrated talk, organised by Book Club Gozo, which will be given in English, the author will include selected readings from his published works, focusing on love letters from Malta, alongside reflections on Malta’s maritime and culinary past.
His books bring to light the world of Maltese corsairs – men who sailed under letters of marque and whose lives were entwined with empire, trade, and survival.
As a Maltese maritime historian, the author’s research explores the intersection of food, war, and seafaring in the Mediterranean. His most recent book, ‘Morte o Fortuna: Corsairs in Malta 1747 – 1798’ (BDL Books, 2024), follows in the wake of his acclaimed earlier study, ‘In the Name of the Prince,’ cementing his reputation as a leading voice on 18th-century Maltese corsairs and naval trade.
Liam Gauci formerly served as Curator of the Malta Maritime Museum and collaborated with artists, curators, and filmmakers to tell Malta’s maritime story in new ways.
Today, he is Senior Asset Development Manager at Heritage Malta and the founder of Taste History, a unique initiative which fuses food history with archival research to recreate the flavours of the past.
Seat reservations are encouraged in advance by sending an email to eventsgozo.library@gov.mt
